The Power of Domain Maturation: A Costly Lesson I Learned

domain_maturity

On October 7, 2025, @Aladey shared a domaining tip on X (formerly Twitter) titled The Power of Domain Maturation.”
I actually saw the post that same day but didn’t pay much attention at first.

The first line of his post hit different later on:

“Most new domainers make the same mistake — they drop names after one year because they didn’t sell.”

At the time, I just scrolled past it. But a few days later, something happened that made that sentence stick.

The Domain That Got Away

A few days after seeing that post, I bought a domain name on GoDaddy Closeout. Once it landed in my GoDaddy account, I immediately tried to list it on different marketplaces — starting with Afternic.

Now, here’s where things got messy.
I’ve got two Afternic accounts and two GoDaddy accounts:

  • The first one from 2022 (my early domaining days), where I dropped about 90% of my names — most were bad anyway.
  • The second one is my main portfolio, which I’ve been building since last year with much better domains.

When I tried logging into Afternic to list the new name, I couldn’t remember the password (typical domainer problem 😅).
I reset it, clicked the link in my email, and unknowingly logged into my old Afternic account.

The surprise?
Right there, I saw a first offer of $100 for one of my domains:
👉 AiCountryMusic.com

Afternic-lead

From Excitement to Regret

I was both excited and worried.
Excited because, wow, someone actually made an offer — but worried because I wasn’t sure I even owned the name anymore.

I remembered seeing an expiration email months back but didn’t know if I renewed it. Still, I went ahead and sent a counteroffer, even though the offer was from April and it was already October 😂.

When I checked my GoDaddy portfolio, the truth hit me — the domain was gone.
I had dropped it last year after holding it for just one year.

That moment stung.
I realized if I had just renewed AiCountryMusic.com for another year — a name I hand-registered for $11 in 2023 — I could’ve easily sold it for hundreds or even thousands of dollars today.

Why?
Because AI keyword domains have been trending massively this year.
And I let one go too early.

Lessons Learned

  1. Domaining is not a get-rich-quick business.
It takes patience, research, and time for your domains to mature in value.
Like one of my mentor @Elle said in one of is recent posts, “Hidden Secrets: The Power of Patience”
  2. Keep your domain accounts organized.
Use one GoDaddy and one Afternic account to avoid confusion and missed offers.
You never know what opportunity might be sitting unnoticed in your inbox.

Final Thought

Domain investing is a long game.
If you’re doing your due diligence, learning from others, and staying patient — your efforts will eventually pay off. Sometimes, losing a good domain is the price of learning a valuable lesson.

  1. Damn!

    We learn everyday.

Mine was more like underselling a name for $30 back then when ATOM.com was Squadhelp I had a brandable name Rymedy.com after holding for 2 years, I sold it to another investor for $30 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ 2 months later it sold on SH for $3k+
